Before You Check Your Phone, Check in with Yourself

Why reaching for your phone first thing in the morning changes your energy.

The familiar moment when you open your eyes – your hand reaches for your phone – and your mind is already racing.

Many people check their phone – notifications, emails, social media – before they’ve even fully arrived in their own body.  Over time, this habit creates anxiety, comparison, and mental clutter before the day even begins.

What you do in the morning before work, school, etc. sets the tone for the rest of the day.  The nervous system absorbs stress and that autonomically triggers the “fight or flight” response.  Scrolling social media can pull you out of yourself in comparing what other people have to yourself.  This habit leads to over stimulation, comparison, urgency where there isn’t any, and can disconnect you from yourself.

My suggestion is to replace that morning screen time with some intentional presence.

My Mindful Alternative:

-            3 Deep Breaths before touching the phone

-            Placing one hand on your heart

-            Notice the morning light

-            Ask yourself – How do I want to feel today?

The first voice you hear each morning should not always be the World’s, sometimes it should be your own.
