Mabon Special!

Blessed Mabon!  This week’s blog is all about Mabon or the Autumnal Equinox which is taking place on September 22, 2026.

This marks the second harvest of the year and equal hours of day and night, moving into the darker months of the year.

Some themes that go along with Mabon are gratitude, balance, harvest, reflection, and abundance.

If you have an altar (witchy or non-witchy) you can integrate colors of the season with gold, orange, burgundy, brown, and deep greens.  The herbs that go along with Mabon are rosemary, sage, cinnamon, mugwort, and calendula.  Crystals would be carnelian, citrine, red agate, Tiger’s eye, and smokey quartz.  Symbols that go along with the season are cornucopia, acorns, wheat, apples, and grapevines.

Mindfulness-wise it is important to focus on the themes of this time of the year.  It is a powerful time for gratitude; you can either do a gratitude meditation, gratitude journaling, or even just name things out loud for which you are grateful.

For some nature-based mindfulness, you can take a walking meditation and notice the juxtaposition or balance of things in nature, the light versus shade, green leaves versus orange/yellow leaves, cool mornings and still warm afternoons, etc.  Collect fallen leaves, focusing on their textures, scent, and the crunching under your feet.

Journaling with reflection in mind would also be a great activity.  You could dive into some shadow work or just journal with reflection on the year, summer, whatever you like.  You can also write down everything you have accomplished or received this year.  Celebrate your “harvest”, no matter how small the wins seem.  You can also make a “Compost” list; write down fears, doubts, or negative self-talk on a piece of paper.  Mindfully shred or (safely) burn the paper, visualizing those heavy feelings breaking down to become fertile soil for future growth.

Abundance is a great theme for gratitude as well.  Not just abundance of money, but also health, family, food, etc.  Abundance is so much more than just money.

Here are some cozy home rituals you can try:

-            Decluttering to Release: Mindfully clean a small space in your home. As you put things away or donate them, mentally let go of old habits, grudges, or worries that no longer serve you.

-            Candlelit Reflection: Light a gold, orange, or brown candle. Stare at the flame and focus on the transition from the active energy of summer to the restful, cozy energy of autumn. (Note: it is not safe to stare at the flame of a candle for long periods of time).

And lastly, a gratitude meditation for Mabon to try:

Mabon Gratitude & Release Meditation

5–10 minutes

Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. If you’d like, light a candle or hold a warm cup of tea.

Close your eyes and take a slow, deep breath in.
Exhale gently.

Again… breathe in.
And let yourself soften as you breathe out.

Imagine yourself surrounded by the colors of autumn — deep reds, burnt orange, golden yellow, and earthy brown.

Picture yourself standing beneath a beautiful autumn tree.

Notice the leaves around you.

Some are still holding on.
Others have already fallen.

And notice how the tree doesn't struggle to release them.

It simply knows when it's time.

Take a moment to reflect:

What am I grateful for right now?

Let the answer come without forcing it.

Maybe it's something big.
Maybe it's something wonderfully ordinary.

A person.
A lesson.
A warm drink.
Your home.
Your body carrying you through another day.
A moment of peace.

Breathe in gratitude.

And as you breathe out, imagine releasing something you no longer need.

A worry.
An expectation.
An old story about yourself.
Something you've been carrying for too long.

You don't have to fix it.

You don't have to understand it.

You can simply let it fall away, like a leaf returning to the earth.

Take another breath.

I honor what has been.
I appreciate what is.
I release what I no longer need.
I make space for what comes next.

Sit with that for a few breaths.

Feel the balance of Mabon — light and darkness, holding on and letting go, doing and resting.

When you're ready, gently bring your awareness back to your body.

Take one final deep breath.

And quietly say to yourself:

“I trust the seasons of my life. I don't have to hold on to everything to be okay.”

Open your eyes when you're ready.

Thank you for your practice.

Let me know which things you are going to try to celebrate Mabon.

Be kind.  Be you.  Keep shining.

Angela
