Loving Kindness Meditation

Loving-kindness meditation (also called metta meditation) is a mindfulness practice that focuses on intentionally cultivating feelings of warmth, compassion, and goodwill—first toward yourself, and then toward others. It’s less about emptying the mind and more about generating kindness in the heart.

How It Works

You sit quietly and repeat simple phrases of goodwill while bringing different people to mind. The goal is to gently nurture feelings of care and connection.

A Simple Loving-Kindness Practice

Settle in Sit comfortably, close your eyes, and take a few slow breaths.

Start with yourself Silently repeat phrases like:

May I be safe.

May I be happy.

May I be healthy.

May I live with ease.

Bring to mind someone you love Picture someone who naturally brings warmth to your heart. Repeat:

May you be safe.

May you be happy.

May you be healthy.

May you live with ease.

Expand outward Gradually include:

A neutral person (someone you see but don’t know well)

Someone you struggle with

All beings everywhere

Example:

May all beings be safe.

May all beings be happy.

May all beings live with ease.

What It Cultivates

Over time this practice can help grow:

Compassion

Self-acceptance

Emotional balance

A sense of connection with others

And an important thing to remember: you don’t have to force the feelings. Even simply setting the intention is part of the practice.

A Mindfulness Reflection

Loving-kindness meditation reminds us that kindness isn’t something we run out of—it’s something we can practice generating, moment by moment.
